Cities continue to grow in the face of urgent challenges like climate change, and plans for the use of limited urban space must now consider the long-term sustainability of cities. This session is designed to explore the key policy objectives necessary to guide and facilitate the redevelopment of urban spaces with a focus on environmental sustainability. Talking points include:
Holistic sustainable development policies – including discussion of incorporating sustainable development principles into urban planning and zoning regulations. This includes incentivising mixed-use developments, promoting compact and transit-oriented design, preserving green spaces, and where to begin with circular economy strategy to reduce waste and conserve resources. It will also cover the need for inclusive planning processes, that foster inclusive and participatory planning processes.
Resilience and climate adaptation – the session will address the integration of resilience and climate adaptation considerations into urban redevelopment policies to address factors like the urban heat island effect. This involves measures to mitigate climate risks, enhance the resilience of infrastructure, promote green and nature-based infrastructure solutions, and ensure equitable access to essential services in the face of climate change impacts.
