Discover innovative concepts to solve urban issues through SusHi Tech Tokyo’s programme focused on leveraging diverse ideas, digital know-how and cutting-edge technologies.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) will host an international event – “SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024” – in the Tokyo Bay area in April and May 2024. It aims to explore cutting-edge innovations for solving urban problems all over the world and envision a model for future urban centres.
Cities are global hubs of innovation, culture, and economic activity, but they also face many complex problems, such as congestion, pollution, inequality, and climate change. Technology development to support smart and sustainable cities has escalated rapidly in recent years, with local governments experimenting with new solutions to help solve their most urgent challenges.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has been promoting the Sustainable High City Tech Tokyo (SusHi Tech Tokyo) initiative to create “sustainable new values” in its quest for next-generation solutions to challenges facing the world’s urban centres, including Tokyo. To that end, the TMG keeps tapping cutting-edge technologies, versatile ideas and digital expertise with a view to sharing what Tokyo has learned with the rest of the world. This year, under the SusHi Tech Tokyo initiative, three main events will take place simultaneously:
The Showcase Program will offer a hands-on experience of a “Tokyo 2050” environment where “nature” and “convenience” are fused. This programme will be given at four venues: Ariake Arena; the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, nicknamed Miraikan; Symbol Promenade Park; and the Umi-no-Mori Area. Among its focuses are the concepts that communities need to enhance environmental sustainability by decreasing energy wastage and reducing burdens on cities’ environmental ecosystems. The programme poses – and seeks to answer – the questions, what should be done to realise a sustainable society where everyone can live equally and comfortably? Why not take the first step towards a sustainable society?
TMG has identified four pillars that are key to the long-term sustainability of cities: tech, mobility, food, and activity. As such, events within SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024 have been developed around these themes, and are set to provide attendees with real-world experiences of an urban future in which concepts can become reality.
The Ariake Arena site will provide visitors with first-hand experiences of future technologies, from taking a virtual space elevator ride, to having a close look at an on-board operable robot, among other exhibits. At the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, robots will entertain visitors by demonstrating how actively their future peers will contribute to society in the future. The Umi-no-Mori Area will be a multi-faceted venue exhibiting a variety of projects, including those undertaken by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to embed cutting-edge technology in society.
Visitors will be able to test ride the latest mobility options at Symbol Promenade Park. There will be flying vehicle demonstration flights at Ariake Arena, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation and the Umi-no-Mori Area. This part of the event will also feature a next-generation, tradition-innovation crossover mobility solution developed jointly by Miyamoto Unosuke Shoten – a 160-year-old festival equipment manufacturer – and RDS Co., which is dedicated to “making today’s ideals tomorrow’s normal.”

Visitors to Symbol Promenade Park will be able to enjoy Earth-friendly meals, called “Zeppin (superb)” gourmet. A fleet of more than 20 kitchen cars, as well as a variety of food booths, will be at the venue, serving plant-based meat, ice cream made with plant-based ingredients, and other cooking ingredients with lower environmental impacts. They will also offer special menus created in collaboration with food specialists with the use of “substandard” vegetables, which otherwise would not be shipped to the market.
At the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, there will be content available for visitors to learn and contemplate about the future of food, including the “Obake (ghost) Restaurant,” a projection mapping exhibit showcasing alternative ingredients for meat and seafood. Some of these alternative ingredients will be available for tasting at the Umi-no-Mori area.
Acknowledging the role of the next generation of people to the long-term sustainability of our cities, he National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation will hold a workshop for children to learn how to invent new things and produce sustainable food. At Symbol Promenade Park, inclusive activities, such as Yuru (loose) Sports and para-sports, will enable and encourage everyone regardless of age, gender and disability to have fun together. Visitors to the park will also have an opportunity to experience scrap wood art production.
In addition, to help as many people as possible know the concept of the SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024 event, the Showcase Program plans to invite Japanese singer yama, who has written the lyrics for a new song, imagining “Tokyo 2050,” to give a live performance. A drama starring Fumino Kimura, Kei Tanaka and Taisei Kido and featuring artificial intelligence (AI) and robots will be screened.
SusHi Tech Tokyo 2024 aims to showcase the vision of a sustainable and inclusive future for cities that embraces diversity and innovation. By engaging with the cutting-edge technologies and the creative ideas of people who live and work in Tokyo, visitors from around the world can experience the possibilities of a brighter future that starts here and now. TMG invites everyone to join the movement of making our cities more liveable, resilient and harmonious for ourselves and the generations to come.
