Panel Debate & Round table Event - Understanding the Role of Blockchain in Cities
Through panel debates and three round tables curated by blockchain experts, we will explore how three major components of smart city – governance, transportation and utilities – can and are, incorporating this technology into future city development, and what benefits this affords.
This SmartCitiesWorld event, in association with Pillar, brings together decision-makers from across the spectrum to debate how blockchain can help to transform smart city infrastructure, but also the challenges which still need to be overcome.

Introduction, Keynote and Panel Debate
Sarah Wray, Editor of SmartCitiesWorld, will unveil the results of a worldwide survey which examines levels of understanding within local/city authorities when it comes to blockchain, along with the challenges around harnessing the technology’s potential.
David Siegel will then provide a keynote address while we take on board his views and visions on how blockchain can transform environments.
This will be followed by a panel debate with blockchain experts who will discuss the challenges unearthed by the research. Delegates will have a chance to ask questions throughout these sessions - making it as interactive as possible!

According to recent predictions, 100% of transport organisations will adopt blockchain in some guise. This could enable Mobility-as-a-Service and help address some of cities’ toughest challenges, such as congestion and poor air quality. This roundtable will look at the benefits this offers cities and their citizens and what it could look like in practice, as well as how cities can build blockchain into their transport strategies.

Biography:
David Siegel is a serial entrepreneur, web pioneer, prolific author, and founder and CEO of the Pillar Project, building an open-source "smart wallet" in London. The Pillar wallet will empower individuals through decentralised technology and ownership of their personal data. David led the Pillar team to a successful ICO, raising over $20 million and making the Pillar token sale one of the most successful grassroots fundings in history.
David received a math degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a master's degree in computer science from Stanford. He was the first employee at Pixar after Steve Jobs funded the company in 1986. He has given over 150 speeches and started over 20 businesses. He is the author of The Token Handbook and is an internationally recognized thought leader in innovation, blockchain, tokenomics, business, startups, and investing.

Charles is a Chartered Engineer with a background in Physics, Transport Modelling, and Intelligent Transport Systems. He has over 10 years’ experience in the public and private sector including four years with the Transport Systems Catapult. He has created impact across a diverse range of novel projects ranging from new ways to increase passenger throughput capacity at stations to a next generation IoT driven highway asset management system. His recent focus has been exploring blockchain applications across transport with the University of Sheffield and wider consortium

Electron is harnessing blockchain technologies to design more efficient, resilient and flexible systems for the energy sector.
Jon has spent his career in energy focused on making the industry function better for consumer engagement, helping them take control of the risks resulting from their need for energy. Starting in 2005 at the outset of flexible energy contracts, Jon developed trading and reporting systems, and automated market information and data services to support the very largest businesses manage their exposure to the energy markets, eventually building up a trading desk managing 12 TWh of wholesale power and gas.
He has supported new entrants to bring competition to markets, and developed innovative retail products that facilitate market access for smaller companies. His understanding of energy policy and developments in technology, and the impacts they have on markets, have helped to bring transparency of costs and their drivers, to enable businesses to understand and optimise their consumption.
Jon has been recognised as an influencer by Siemens, is a regular a keynote speaker, panellist and moderator at energy and blockchain events, and frequent media commentator on energy issues.
