Platform aims to secure trust in smart cities

Cyber security and Internet of Things (IoT) company WISeKey has launched a citizen digital identity platform under the Microsoft CityNext initiative.

Through the global initiative, which aims to empower cities, businesses and citizens "to re-imagine their futures", the two companies aim to help leaders to do “new with less”. They will combine technology with innovative ideas to securely connect governments, businesses and citizens with city services that increase efficiencies and reduce costs as well as foster a more sustainable environment and cultivate communities where people thrive.

WISeKey’s identity management and cyber-security solution for the IoT will provide smart cities with a scalable, easily manageable object identity management and security solution when connecting to Microsoft Azure and other Microsoft-based platforms.

The WISeKey cryptographic Root of Trust (RoT) provides secure authentication and identification, in both physical and virtual environments, for the IoT, blockchain and artificial intelligence. It serves as a common trust anchor to ensure the integrity of online transactions among objects and between objects and people.

“Government employees and city infrastructure from traffic lights and smart parking solutions, to power grids and smart utility meters, are vulnerable to cyber attacks,” said Carlos Moreira, WISeKey’s CEO.

“We view Microsoft’s CityNext initiative as an innovative force that will help to transform government infrastructure and we are pleased to have already collaborated with Microsoft on government and city cyber-security projects in various countries around the globe.”

Since they announced their partnership a year ago, WISeKey and Microsoft have been working to introduce the alliance to existing and potential customers and have secured projects in Rwanda, Mauritius, New York, Argentina and India.
