TomTom accelerates the future of driving

The company used CES 2018 to announce AI company, Baidu, and autonomous and driver assistance software firm, Zenuity, as first partners to use the technology

Navigation technology specialist TomTom has unveiled two technologies to support autonomous driving and announced new partnerships with Baidu, Zenuity and Qualcomm to help further boost its position in the industry.

 

TomTom AutoStream, a map delivery for autonomous driving and advanced driver assistance systems, has launched with two initial partners Baidu and Zenuity.

 

Autostream enables vehicles to “build a horizon for the road ahead” by streaming the latest map data from the TomTom cloud while MotionQ is a predictive driving concept that aims to ensure the comfort of passengers in self-driving transport.

 

AutoStream is designed in a flexible way, allowing customers to customise the map data stream based on criteria such as sensor configuration and horizon length, said TomTom. It can stream a wide variety of map data including ADAS attributes such as gradient and curvature, and the TomTom HD map with RoadDNA.

 

This flexibility allows customers to use AutoStream to power a wide range of driving automation functions.

 

Willem Strijbosch, TomTom’s head of autonomous driving, described the introduction of AutoStream as a game-changer for OEMs and technology companies that are working on the future of driving.

 

“TomTom AutoStream allows vehicles to access the latest, most up-to-date TomTom map data for their driving automation functions,” he said.

 

“With TomTom AutoStream, we can significantly simplify and shorten the development time for our customers, accelerating the future of driving.”

 

Finally, TomTom and Qualcomm have announced that they are working together to demonstrate new location technologies for autonomous driving – specifically, fusing the TomTom HD (high definition) map, with camera technologies and GPS data from the Qualcomm drive data platform, to power highly precise and reliable localisation for connected car applications and autonomous vehicles.

 

“Whether you talk about smart mobility, connected cars or autonomous driving, the minimum common denominator is navigation technologies. The future of mobility relies on a mix of high-definition maps, real-time maps, advanced navigation software, and live data from vehicle sensors,” added Harold Goddijn, CEO, TomTom.

 

“That’s why this year we’ve made key introductions to drive this future, with the launch of TomTom AutoStream, TomTom MotionQ, and important partnerships with the likes of Baidu and Zenuity.”
