Chicago is looking to smart city technology to solve issues including poverty, inequality and racial segregation.

Chicago’s penchant for large infrastructure projects, from tall towers to one of the world’s busiest airports, means that it is thinking big when it comes to its smart city strategy.

Its Array of Things urban sensing network is seeking to address congestion, pollution, poor air quality and climate change. The city has also introduced an Open Data portal and projects aimed at addressing the digital divide.

The city faces a myriad of longstanding issues - from racial inequality to social exclusion - that have been compounded by the coronavirus pandemic. Like other cities, it is tasked with identifying the socioeconomic fallout, restarting the economy and shifting to the post Covid era.
