As cities around the world face increasing pressure to reduce their environmental footprint and optimise their operations, the integration of sustainability and system interoperability has never been more urgent. With environmental challenges intensifying, better connected city infrastructure and operations are now paramount.
This event at Smart City Expo World Congress, supported by Signify, comes at a pivotal time for cities. Through two concurrent, in-depth roundtable discussions, participants will have the opportunity to hear from leaders on sustainability and interoperability challenges and solutions, and engage with global peers on tackling pressing issues, such as optimising energy use in buildings and grids, reducing traffic congestion through smart infrastructure, and ensuring that city systems are interoperable and secure.
Below, you’ll find some of the specifics of the discussions, and register your interest in the one most relevant to your situation and expertise. The roundtables are reserved for those who represent cities and local and regional governments – all registrations will be reviewed to ensure relevance and you will be informed whether your registration has been successful via email.

This roundtable will explore critical strategies for achieving sustainability in today’s urban environments. With energy use rising and cities facing increasing grid congestion, how can municipalities balance growth with responsible consumption?
This workshop will allow participants to examine the latest innovations, such as smart grids, IoT-based traffic systems, and energy-efficient building designs, and how to address these challenges while promoting sustainable development.
Discussion points will include:
As cities transition to smart, interconnected systems, ensuring interoperability across various platforms becomes paramount – not only for existing operations, but for futureproofing and system resilience.
This roundtable will focus on the technical and governance frameworks required to achieve citywide interoperability. It gives participants the opportunity to explore the principles behind more open systems, discuss key interoperability standards such as IoT frameworks, and examine how cities can balance the demands for both open access and security.
